Squirrels are amazing creatures

Did you know they can jump 10 times their body length and rotate their ankles 180 degrees to face any direction when climbing? They also have excellent eyesight and learn by quickly copying other animals.
They aren’t shy about going out during the day, making them one of the rare wild mammals that many of us see. Whether you think they’re a nuisance or an adorable sight, check out these amazing squirrel facts!

1. In Greek, the word squirrel means shadow tail.
2. Squirrels’ most iconic behavior is storing nuts and acorns for the winter. What is needed for squirrel species that do not hibernate?
3. Squirrels’ hind legs are double-jointed, which gives them the ability to run up and into trees very quickly.
4. A male squirrel can smell a female in heat up to a kilometer away.

5. The mating season for squirrels is February through May, with a gestation period of 44 days. Two to four pups are usually born per litter.

15. In 2013, authorities closed the camp in the Los Angeles National Forest when they found an infected squirrel living there. The infection killed a 15-year-old boy from Kyrgyzstan who he caught from a mountain squirrel. 100 person had to be quarantined for this infection to be contained.

16. Squirrels are intelligent creatures and can learn to navigate various obstacles to find the most efficient route to their food. They are also very good at finding shortcuts.

18. In the 2005 remake of “Charlie And The Chocolate Factory” the squirrels were real. For the squirrel scene, the squirrels were not CGI but were actually real life and were professionally trained by The Nut Room Animal trainer Michael Alexander and his team, who spent 19 weeks training these squirrels for this scene.

19. In 1963, the town of Longview, Washington has a bridge called the Nutty Narrows. The 60-foot-long bridge has turned the city into the squirrel lover’s capital of America. Longview now holds an annual Squirrel Fest in August each year.
20. Squirrels play an important ecological role, especially in forest ecosystems. Its greatest contribution to the forest is to shape the plant composition. They have a peculiar habit of taking seeds, which are their main source of nutrients and burying them.
